Tragic | Couple Dies In Car Crash Just Five Days After Getting Engaged

Kirsty Belsham, 22 and Alex Wilson, 23, were pronounced dead at the scene after Kirsty's grey Fiat Punto crashed into a ditch at a notorious accident blackspot near Chorley, Lancashire.

The couple had two children - Lacey May, five and Tyler James, four - and had vowed to spend the rest of their lives together after Alex popped the question on March 19.

Alex's heartbroken grandmother Elspbeth said: "They were happier than they had been in years. It was a joy to see them.

"They were a young couple and they had a lightness and brightness and playfulness about them.

Police say the Punto failed to negotiate a right-hand bend on Runshaw Lane near the Plough Inn pub and crashed into the ditch.

It is understood Ms Belsham, who was driving the car, and Mr Wilson, who was in the front passenger seat, both died from catastrophic head injuries.

Officers said they were pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other vehicles involved.

A police spokesman said: "We got a call just after 11pm from a passing motorist reporting a car in a ditch.\
Friends of the couple are collecting donations for a trust fund for their children.

They set a target of £2,000 and have already achieved a total of more £3,000.
